Campfire bans could be lifted soon with cooler and wet conditions in B.C. on the way

With cooler conditions and rain in the forecast, the B.C. Wildfire Service says some areas of the Coastal fire region could see campfire bans partially lifted before the weekend.

The Coastal Fire Centre says more details will be revealed tomorrow.

In a tweet Wednesday, the B.C. Wildfire Service said a ban currently in effect for the coastal region is not planned to be fully rescinded, but some areas could be partially reversed.

The forecast for Vancouver Island shows rain and highs below 20 degrees Celsius starting Friday and into next week.

A ban on all open burning, including campfires, went into effect July 18 within the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction and expanded to include Haida Gwaii Aug. 8.

The area known as the fog zone along the west coast of Vancouver Island is exempt from the ban.

The wildfire service expects to lift campfire bans in effect for the Prince Geoge, Cariboo and Kamloops Fire Centre before the weekend.

More than 2,000 wildfires have been sparked across B.C. since Apr. 1, with 285 of those in the Coastal Fire Region.
