A recreational facility in Campbell River will be closed for nearly six months in order to undergo repairs.

The City of Campbell River says the Sportsplex located in Willow Point Park on Alder Street will be closed for repairs from May 2 until Oct. 31.

Repairs include fixing the building’s roof, which has been leaking. The splash park, outdoor courts and fields, and bike and skate parks will remain open during repairs. Outdoor washrooms at the Sportsplex will also be open, except when the roof is removed and during power interruptions, the city notes.

“We appreciate the continued support of our community during this change, and look forward to re-opening the Sportsplex for the citizens of Campbell River in the fall,” Karen Langford, recreation and culture operations supervisor, said in a release.

As a result of the closure, the City of Campbell River says some Sportsplex weight room equipment will be moved to Gym 2 of the Community Centre on 11 Avenue, including cardio machines, weights and spin bikes. The anticipated opening date for the temporary Community Centre weight room is May 16.

Furthermore, fitness classes are being relocated to the Community Centre and other locations, beginning May 9. The Community Centre’s hours will also be extended, opening from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. On weekends, it will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fitness pass holders can continue to use their fitness memberships at the Community Centre. Those who are pass holders but do not want to use the Community Centre can suspend their pass and have it reactivated when the Sportsplex opens again, request a refund or transfer their pass to someone else for a $5 transfer fee.

The City of Campbell River says recreation staff are currently building the summer program schedules, and are looking for alternative spaces to relocate various programs and fitness classes for the summer and fall as a result of the closure.

The city also says a full gymnasium will not be available for indoor sports that require the use of a full gym during the closure. Sports such as badminton, floor hockey, indoor soccer, pickleball and soft tennis can be held in half a gym but may experience reduced service levels, the city notes.
