Firefighters in Campbell River were busy early this morning dealing with a house fire that sent one person to hospital.

Campbell River Fire Department says firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 3700-block of South Island Highway, in the city’s south end, at around 3:35 a.m. Sunday.

When crews arrived on scene, they found a home was heavily involved in flames, according to Campbell River Fire Department chief Thomas Doherty, who said three people were inside the home but managed to escape.

One man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, Old Island Highway was closed for a couple of hours while firefighters battled the blaze and remained on scene until just before 9 a.m.

There’s no indication yet how the fire started though Doherty says it appears to have started in an area near the ceiling and attic.
