Brentwood College edges Oak Bay in all-island classic

CHEK

WATCH: The Brentwood College high school boys basketball team edged Oak Bay high 89-85 in the finale of the 2nd annual UVic Vikes Alumni Senior Boys Invitational.

The Oak Bay Bays got off to a hot start, point guard Diego Maffia scored 22 points in the first half to give his team a 46-39 lead at the half. In the second half, Brentwood College’s defence and size would come into the equation, as they scored at will in the paint while protecting their rim with some monster blocks from Somto Dimonachie. Brentwood College trailed Oak Bay by 4 points late, but some key defensive stops and two clutch buckets gave Brentwood College a two point lead with just enough time for Oak Bay to have one last possession. However, the Bays would turn the ball over and Brentwood College would sink two free throws to ice the game.

This was an all-island matchup, but also a game that saw two of the best teams not only on the island, but in the province. Brentwood College is the #1 ranked “AA” team, while Oak Bay is the #1 ranked “AAAA” team in British Columbia.
