B.C. reports 102 new cases of COVID-19, one new case in Island Health region

Another case of COVID-19 has been reported within the Island Health.

B.C. reported 102 new cases of COVID-19 on Oct. 6, including one new case on Vancouver Island, bringing the provincial total to 9,841 cases.

The province’s death toll now stands at 244, after two deaths from the virus were announced Tuesday.

The number of active cases stands at 1,384 while a total of 3,089 people in B.C. are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 5,038 cases of COVID-19 reported in the Fraser Health region, 3,612 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 556 in the Interior Health, 324 in the Northern Health, 122 in Island Health, and 90 cases in people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 71 individuals currently in hospital with COVID-19, 16 of whom are in intensive care.

On a positive note, a total of 8,184 people who tested positive for the virus have since recovered.

As a result of today’s announcement, there are now 11 active cases of COVID-19 within the Island Health region, which covers all of Vancouver Island and surrounding islands as well as an area north of the Sunshine Coast.

Data available on Island Health’s website shows that there are five active cases in both central and southern Vancouver Island and one active case in northern Vancouver Island.

Yesterday, 11 new cases over a 72 hour period were announced for Island Health, however, of those 11 cases, only 10 were considered active.

A spokesperson for Island Health told CHEK that is because a case can be removed from the active list if it has been 10 days since the onset of symptoms.

Between March and September, public health workers with Island Health contacted nearly 1,000 people about possible high-risk exposure to COVID-19, according to a Freedom of Information request submitted by CHEK.

If there is a confirmed COVID-19 case in a school, public health contacts affected school community members directly. Regional health authorities also post school notifications on their websites, providing the date and type of notification (outbreak, cluster or exposure) for impacted schools.

The Island Health school site can be found here. Island Health has reported one school exposure to date: Alberni District Secondary School.  The dates of exposure are Sept. 14, 15, 17, 18, and 22.

B.C. has posted detailed information about the geographic distribution of COVID-19 cases from January to August 2020. This map will be updated monthly, according to B.C. health officials.

According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University and Medicine, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide is more than 35.6 million. More than one million deaths have been recorded.
