B.C. adds 609 new COVID-19 cases, 55 in Island Health

British Columbia health officials have reported 609 new cases and six deaths from COVID-19 since their last update on Tuesday.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. climbs to 203,582 while the province’s death toll now stands at 2,137.

Of the new cases, 79 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 257 were in Fraser Health, 55 in Island Health, 92 in Interior Health, and 126 in Northern Health. Five of the deaths were recorded in Fraser Health while the remaining death was in Northern Health.

There are currently 4,784 active cases in the province and 422 people in hospital — 157 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 196,342 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 8,186,611 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

The Ministry of Health says 90.1 per cent of all eligible adults have received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 85.3 per cent have received a second dose.

From Oct. 19-25, people who were not fully vaccinated accounted for 64.1 per cent of cases and from Oct. 12-25, they accounted for 74.9 per cent of hospitalizations, according to a tweet from Health Minister Adrian Dix.

The B.C. government reported 524 active cases in the Island Health region, while Island Health’s public dashboard reported 461 active cases due to a lag in reporting data. Of those, 135 were recorded on the South Island, 276 on the Central Island and 50 on the North Island.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, 56 people are currently hospitalized in the Island Health region, with 22 of those people in critical care. Eighty-nine people have died from COVID-19 in Island Health to date.
