221 new COVID cases and 3 deaths in Island Health over the weekend, region’s death toll hits 100

British Columbia health officials on Monday reported 1,438 new COVID-19 cases, including 221 linked to Vancouver Island, and 17 deaths over the weekend.

Three of the deaths were in Island Health, bringing the region’s overall death toll to 100 since the first case was recorded in March 2020.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 209,703 while the death toll climbs to 2,218.

Daily new case breakdown:
Nov. 5-6: 553 new cases
Nov. 6-7: 462 new cases
Nov. 7-8: 423 new cases

Of the other new cases identified in B.C. over the weekend, 155 were in Vancouver Coastal Health, 575 were in Fraser Health, 321 were in Interior Health, and 166 were in Northern Health. There were also six deaths in Northern Health, five in Fraser Health, two in Vancouver Coastal Health, and one recorded in Interior Health over the weekend.

Currently, there are 4,282 active cases in the province and 407 people in hospital — 121 of whom are in intensive care.

Provincial health officials say there are 615 active cases in the Island Health region. However, Island Health authority pegs the number at 518 active cases — 86 in North Island, 306 in Central Island, and 126 in South Island. There are often discrepancies between the figures due to “differences in reporting” timeframes between the two agencies.

As of Nov. 8, 90.3 per cent of all eligible people 12 and over in B.C. have received one dose of vaccine while 86 per cent have had their second jab.

New data from health officials shows that from Oct. 29 to Nov. 4, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 65.5 per cent of all cases and from Oct. 22 to Nov. 4 they accounted for 71 per cent of all hospitalizations.

A total of 202,898 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 8,346,993 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide. When it comes to Vancouver Island, there have been 11,346 cases reported, 595 people hospitalized and 10,600 recoveries recorded in the region since the onset of the pandemic.
