B.C. reports 983 new COVID cases, 410 people currently in hospital

B.C. has reported 983 new PCR-confirmed COVID cases in the province between July 24 and July 30, with 410 people currently in hospital with the virus.

The number of new cases is an increase of 62 from the previous week when 921 cases were reported.

Of those cases, 152 were in Island Health, 379 in Fraser Health, 231 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 164 in Interior Health, and 57 in Northern Health.

B.C. currently only reports numbers of people who test positive from a PCR test, and only immunocompromised people, people with high-risk conditions, people 70 or older, people who aren’t fully vaccinated, or people whose medical care may be affected by a positive result are eligible for PCR tests.

The province does not have a way for people to report rapid test results and does not include rapid test results in COVID updates.

In the same week 242 people were admitted to hospital, and 35 to critical care.

There were 28 people who died with COVID, seven of whom were in Island Health.

The number of hospital admissions, critical care admissions, and deaths are conditional and subject to change.

In the province this week, there were 14,324 new PCR tests conducted, 1,381 in Island Health.

The positivity rate in the province is at 11.1 per cent on July 30, and Island Health’s is at 15.4 per cent.

Each week, the province updates the previous week’s hospital admissions, critical care admissions, and deaths.

Between July 17 and July 23, the province previously reported there were 222 hospital admissions and have updated that to 281.

The same week, there are now 45 reported critical care admissions, when it was previously reported at 39.

The number of people who died has increased to 32, instead of the previously reported 29.

Deaths between July 10 and July 16 has also increased from 39 to 40.
