25 commercial break-and-enters reported in first week of 2024: Nanaimo RCMP

Nanaimo RCMP is responding to a spike in commercial property break-and-enters in the first week of 2024, where 25 have been reported compared to eight in the same period in 2023.

The break-and-enters happened between Jan. 1 and 8, and the RCMP says there have been no residential break-ins so far in 2024.

In order to prevent break-and-enters, police recommend having motion detection alarms or security in place and to report to police if someone is seen in or near a fenced area after hours. RCMP also recommends identifying all valuables with a unique number or word in order to make them easily identifiable if stolen.

Many of the break-ins occurred at construction sites and power tools were stolen.

On Jan. 2 a daycare was broken into and two computers were stolen.

On Jan. 4, two underground parking lots were broken into and three bikes were stolen across the three.

On Jan. 6, a Nanaimo Ladysmith School District building was broken into and power tools were stolen.
