Vital People: Greater Victoria boy spreads Christmas cheer one carol at time

Christmas carols fill the air this time of year, but nine-year-old Weston isn’t just spreading holiday cheer — he’s carolling for a cause.

“He’s been doing this since he was six-years-old and it’s kind of become a tradition,” explains Nadia Green, Weston’s mom.

For the fourth year in a row, the pint-size performer is belting out holiday hits in front of Tanners Bookstore in Sidney to raise much-needed funds for the Saanich Peninsula Lion’s Food Bank.

“One morning he just decided, ‘Oh mom, we should go Christmas carolling’. And I said, “I don’t know if I’m brave enough to do that,” and he said, ‘It’s okay. I’ll do all the singing.’ And, you know, how could I refuse an opportunity to help out the community? So here we are.”

With his grandmother as backup ringing bells, Weston’s now raised close to $1,200 in his four years of fundraising.

“I think COVID really brought it home because he started in 2020 during COVID when he heard the adults talking about the financial stress it was causing for families,” Weston’s grandmother, Susan Gnucci, explains.

“During COVID, lots of people lost their jobs, right? And so I thought that if I raised money for the food bank, people could get the food,” Weston adds.

“I’m just super proud, of course, and I just love seeing him spread so much cheer and joy around Sidney,” Nadia says.

As Weston sings ‘Santa Clause is Coming to Town,’ it’s pretty clear Weston is at the top of the nice list.
