Starting line is in sight for first-time runners of TC10K

In the lead up to the TC10K, runners train at PISE to get ready for the race.

There’s nothing like pounding down the stretch toward the finish line, but for runners in the TC10K training clinic, there’s something special about approaching the start line.

“As a mom of two sitting at a desk all day it’s good to get out there,” says a smiling Jane O’Reilly.

“Out there” is PISE on a Tuesday night, as O’Reilly and dozens of other runners prepare for the 35th annual TC10K April 28. Clinics started in January and benefit runners of all ages and stages with an emphasis not just on form and progress, but also warm-up and injury prevention.

Helen Bell estimates she’s run the race 25 times, and will be running next Sunday with her family.

“This has been a tough training session. My husband has been ill,” says the longtime runner.

The Tuesday night sessions have helped her focus and stay grounded. This year’s race is less about her race time, but time spent with her husband.

“I’m really looking forward to doing the run, then doubling back to pick him up and walk the rest of the way with him,” Bell said. “He’s going to do the 10K walking.”

The race will follow its usual course, starting near the B.C. Legislature heading north down Wharf Street, before heading up Yates Street, winding its way through Fairfield, before a long, picturesque stretch of Dallas Road, looping its way through James Bay before returning to the finish line at the Legislature.

“It’s probably the most iconic, most beautiful 10K course in Canada,” says event director Mark DeFrias. He predicts about 9,000 runners will compete this year, and registration is still open.

DeFrias adds the 35th anniversary race will be a 90s theme, so expect plenty of new kids on the block.

“We’ve got a lot of people who’ve just recently gotten into running and they’re just taking off,” says Kelly.

Runners can still register for $65, with registration closing April 27.
