‘This year it’s for my mom’: Royals D-man set to play with heavy heart on Pink in the Rink night

For Victoria Royals defenceman Will Warm, this year’s Pink in the Rink game takes on a personal meaning. Less than a year ago, Will’s mother Wendi was diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a lump while on vacation.

“It was one of those phone calls, one of those moments that you never really forget,” said an emotional Warm. “I remember exactly where I was and exactly what happened.”

Wendi Warm also remembers the call. “Having to phone Will and try and tell him that I was fine and that I was going to be fine, but, you know, this is what is going on….was really the hardest.”

With Will, his older brother Beck and his mom all living in separate cities, the chemotherapy process wasn’t easy. But the 20-year-old Will found strength through his mother’s positive outlook.

“Her positive energy and just the strength that she showed going through….that really gave the rest of our family strength,” said Warm.

And in turn, Wendi used her sons as motivation.

“There were days when it didn’t feel that easy and then there were times when it was like nope, you know what, I got these guys that I’m going to get better for.”

After a tough year of ups and downs, Wendi won the battle.

“I’m cancer-free right now and as I say this, I’ve just never felt so taken care of.”

With the 2020 Pink in the Rink game set for Saturday, February 22nd, Warm will be playing with a heavy heart.

“Every time before I put the jersey on, it’s go out there and think why you’re doing this and who you’re fighting for, and this year it’s for my mom.”
