RCMP say fatal police-involved shooting at Departure Bay linked to carjacking in Penticton

RCMP have confirmed that the police shooting at the Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo Tuesday is connected to a Penticton carjacking that left a driver with serious injuries.

According to BC RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said the carjacking took place Monday night in Penticton and the driver involved sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

“That incident remains under active investigation, but we are not in a position to release additional details at this time,” Shoihet said.

The male suspect in the carjacking died Tuesday after police attempted to arrest him at the Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo.

Officials said the vehicle the suspect was in was stopped by police and a takedown was initiated as the man disembarked from the ferry.

Initial information based on police accounts indicate the man exited the vehicle with what was believed was a firearm and that shots were fired resulting in the man sustaining serious injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries.

None of the officers or other members of the public were injured in the incident. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. and the B.C. Coroners Service are both investigating the incident.
