Police looking for suspect after overnight shooting in Courtenay

WATCH: Police in the Comox Valley are on the hunt for a shooting suspect after a man was shot by someone who he found on his property.

Comox Valley RCMP are looking for one suspect after a 30-year-old man was shot on his property in Courtenay early Wednesday morning.

At around 1:25 a.m., police were called to a shooting at a residence in the 5700 block of Highway 19A North in Courtenay.

Police said the 30-year-old man encountered another man on his property and was shot after a “brief interaction.”

The man who shot was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have described the suspect as a younger white man, approximately 20 to 25-years-old.

Investigators aren’t saying if it was an interrupted break and enter however Const. Rob Gardner with the Comox Valley RCMP said police have responded to several tips throughout the day, including some sightings of a Caucasian man, approximately 20 to 25-years-old near Coleman Road.

During one call, a homeowner reported finding an unknown man in his unlocked detached garage. Police said when the man was confronted, he fled on foot.

Police have not yet confirmed that the incident is related to the shooting but they are encouraging residents on Highway 19A and Coleman Road to report any suspicious activity to Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321. If someone sees a suspicious person, they are asked to call 911 immediately and not approach the person.

Anyone who was in the area during the shooting who may have seen something suspicious is asked to call Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and cite file number 2018-3288. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
