CHEK Upside: Courtenay based duck pest control business takes flight

WatchCameron Ezzy's aptly named Slugs N' Bugs for Lunch Pest Control has been turning heads across the Comox Valley.

In the Comox Valley, there’s a new business that’s got everyone quacking.

Cameron Ezzy was looking to start an all organic pest control company and found the perfect solution with his feathered friends.

“When I moved onto this property people were telling me about the slug problems and then I found out about ducks and I went ‘Slugs N’ Bugs for Lunch, that’s so cool,'” exclaims Ezzy.

“I got ducks and I started training them and I went and picked up slugs myself when they were too young to get out here and that’s where it started.”

Ezzy loads his ducks into a custom-built eco-friendly transporter, a Norco bicycle with a baby trailer, and brings the slug eaters right to his customer’s yards.

Ever since his first post on social media, he’s been inundated with requests.

“I’ve never had so much interest in anything I’ve ever done on social media. It’s kind of like ‘wow, this is cool,” exclaims Ezzy.

The ducks have become quite the roadside attraction.

“It’s great to watch people, even when he’s just working the ditches here,” says Ezzy’s landlord, Maureen McNulty. “It’s just so much fun to watch people’s reactions and kids on the buses and that kind of stuff.”

“I love that people smile at this,” said Ezzy. “That is the best thing is that everyone, well nine out of 10, really stop and just smile,” Ezzy adds.

It’s his way to help the environment and bring a little happiness to the world of pest control.

“I don’t want to tell anyone what to do but I found a way to do it naturally, which is a lot of fun and ducks make people smile,” says Ezzy.

“I just found a humane way to have fun and make money,” smiles Ezzy.
