The coronavirus has been responsible for nearly 1.6 million deaths worldwide.

According to the World Health Organization’s website, a total of 1,588,854 deaths have been reported to them since January.

Nearly 25,000 deaths — including 11,868 on Saturday — were reported to the global health organization in the past 48 hours alone.

The United States, which has reported the highest number of cases of any nation, has recorded 290,933 deaths from COVID-19 — the most of any country or territory.

Brazil, India and Mexico have all reported more than 100,000 deaths while the United Kingdom and Italy have recorded slightly less than 65,000 deaths from the virus.

Countries with 20,000 or more deaths include France, Iran, Spain, Russia, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, South Africa, Poland and Germany.

As of Saturday morning, Canada had reported 13,109 deaths to the World Health Organization. Canada has the 24th highest death toll in the world.

Only four countries — Peru, Belgium, Chile and Romania — with a smaller population than Canada have reported more deaths.

The number of deaths globally appears to be dropping off slightly this week.

Data available on the World Health Organization’s website shows that 63,794 deaths have been reported so far this week, compared to 74,218 deaths reported globally last week — the most of any week since the pandemic began.
