Witty’s Lagoon to experience area closures for invasive species removal

The Capital Regional District will be closing areas of Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park between Aug. 15-19 in order to remove an invasive species.

Black knapweed is an invasive species that has been identified for removal, though closure schedules may change due to weather.

The areas to be treated will be fenced off, and park attendees are asked to keep out of the fenced areas, and to keep pets out as well.

Park trails and the beach will remain open.

According to the CRD, black knapweed is a highly prolific seed producer and large infestations increase runoff and erosion leading to sedimentation of watercourses. The plant can also alter soil chemistry which prevents the growth of other plants and makes the pasture unpalatable for grazing animals.

The CRD asks infestations of black knapweed or other invasive species to be reported to invasive@crd.bc.ca or 250-360-3302.
