The campaign period for this year’s civic elections hasn’t even kicked off, but some towns and cities on Vancouver Island already know who their next mayor will be.
With the nomination period for municipal elections officially over as of Friday, the mayoral race already appears to be over for 11 municipalities, barring any disqualifications.
The mayors for the following communities are running unopposed, meaning they can likely breathe a little easier once the campaign period begins Saturday, Sept. 17:
- OAK BAY – Kevin Murdoch
- COMOX – Nicole Minions
- CENTRAL SAANICH – Ryan Windsor
- DUNCAN – Michelle Staples
- LADYSMITH – Aaron Stone
- SIDNEY – Cliff McNeil-Smith
- TOFINO – Dan Law
- HIGHLANDS – Ken Williams
- SAYWARD – Mark Baker
- ALERT BAY – Dennis Buchanan
- ZEBALLOS – Julie Colbourne
Many of the to-be-acclaimed mayors are familiar names, such as Central Saanich’s Ryan Windsor, who won the race in 2014 and was acclaimed once already in 2018, while it appears Nicole Minions — the sister-in-law of Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions — will take over as a first-term mayor in Comox, replacing outgoing incumbent Russ Arnott.
General voting day in the B.C. civic elections will take place Saturday, Oct. 15.
