Large parts of Vancouver Island can expect windy weather this Thanksgiving Monday.

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for northern, eastern, and western Vancouver Island, stating that wind speeds could reach as high as 110 km/h in certain areas as a low pressure system moves into the region.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break,” said Environment Canada.

The weather agency says southeast winds ranging from 70 km/h to 100 km/h are expected over western Vancouver Island late this evening.

Meanwhile, areas of eastern Vancouver Island near the northern Georgia Strait can expect southeast wind speeds of 60 km/h gusting to as high as 90 km/h overnight.

Winds will snap to westerly or southwesterly, reaching speeds between 50-70 km/h gusting up to 90 km/h or higher Tuesday morning for eastern and western Vancouver Island.

Eastern Vancouver Island communities that fall under the warning include Courtenay to Campbell River and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.

Environment Canada also says that Northern Vancouver Island will see southeast winds of 90 km/h gusting to 110 km/h over the exposed coastal sections of the region tonight.

Meanwhile, Greater Victoria and the Gulf Islands will see winds rising to southeast 30 to 50 km/h gusting to 70 km/h overnight, according to a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada on Monday afternoon.
