Environment Canada has issued wind warnings for Greater Victoria and western Vancouver Island due to a low pressure centre will cross the region.

Wind warnings have been issued for Greater Victoria and western Vancouver Island.

Environment Canada says strong winds reaching 70 km/h over areas of Greater Victoria near the Juan de Fuca Strait are expected on Tuesday evening.

“A low pressure centre will cross southern Vancouver Island late this evening and move into the BC Interior overnight. Behind the low, strong winds will develop through Juan de Fuca Strait giving westerly winds of 70 km/h over areas of Greater Victoria near the strait,” said Environment Canada.

Heavy winds are expected to ease by Wednesday afternoon over Greater Victoria.

The low pressure system will also generate strong winds over parts of western Vancouver Island at around 12 a.m. on Wednesday. Environment Canada says wind speeds are expected to reach speeds of 70 km/h to 90 km/h and will ease in the morning hours on Wednesday.

Additionally, winds over the Southern Gulf Islands are expected to reach 70 km/h after midnight and ease on Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada says the strong winds could cause damage.
