According to the World Health Organization, there were 383,359 new cases of COVID-19 reported to them on Oct. 10, bringing the global total number of cases to 36.7 million.

It’s the highest single-day increase of new cases ever reported by WHO and comes following two straight days of record-setting daily increases.

Data available on WHO’s website shows that in the past 72 hours, more than a million new cases of the deadly virus have been reported worldwide.

India, the United States and Mexico, Brazil, France, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Spain had the highest number of new cases, with each nation reporting more than 12,000 new cases on Oct. 10.

It’s the first time in weeks that Brazil has not been among the top three nations with the highest number of new cases in a single day.

Once again, India had more new cases of COVID-19 than any other nation, with 73,272 new cases reported on Oct. 10.

The United States reported its highest single-day increase since mid-August, with 54,232 new cases. Canada’s southern neighbour still has the highest number of reported cases of any country, with 7.5 million. Although, India, which has routinely been reporting far more cases than the United States, is closing in on 7 million total cases.

Mexico saw its highest-ever daily increase on Oct. 10 reporting 30,468 new cases. They also reported 3,013 new deaths. According to Merco Press, health officials in Mexico attributed the spike to a backlog of new cases and deaths that had not been reported since June.

France reported its highest-ever single-day increase of new cases, with 20,120 new cases. According to France24, Paris and other regions have been put on lockdown with cafes and bars closed for at least 15 days following a surge in new cases. The country reported more than 17,000 new cases on Oct. 8 and more than 18,000 new cases on Oct. 9. France24 also said 40 per cent of intensive care unit beds in the Paris region were being occupied by people infected with COVID-19.

The rise in new infections is a large reason behind the record-setting number of new cases reported globally on Oct. 10.

At least six other countries in Europe – Czech Republic (8,617), the Netherlands (5,959), Belgium (5,385), Poland (4,739), Slovakia (1,184), and Bulgaria (612) – also reported their highest single-day increase in new cases on Oct. 10.

Furthermore, Italy and Germany saw their highest daily increase in new cases in months.

Italy reported 5,327 new cases, its highest one-day increase since late March, while Germany recorded 4,721 cases, its highest one-day rise since early April.

Elsewhere around the world, Iran – where new cases have been steadily increasing for weeks – recorded 4,142 new cases.

Meanwhile, China, where COVID-19 infections were first discovered, reported just 26 new cases on Oct. 10. The world’s most populous country has not reported more than 50 new cases in one day to the World Health Organization since mid-August.

Lastly, Canada reported 2,436 new cases, the country’s third-highest daily increase of new cases.
