The Capital Regional District is warning people to avoid entering the waters along several Greater Victoria shorlines because of a potential health risk.

The CRD says heavy rain caused combined storm water and wastewater overflows on Thursday.

The areas affected are in the vicinity of Macaulay Point in Esquimalt, McMicking Point, Humber and Rutland in Oak Bay, and Finnerty Cove in Saanich.

As a precaution, and in consultation with Island Health and the local municipalities, beaches within the affected areas will be posted with public health advisory signs until sample results show the risk has abated.
