North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP says an Island man is in custody and is facing more than 40 charges.

The detachment says in a release that officers closed in on a priority offender with numerous warrants, along with a court-ordered condition to not be on Vancouver Island.

RCMP located 37-year-old Tyler Elrix in Duncan as he attempted to avoid being identified.

Officers found Elrix in a vehicle that was confirmed stolen and had a number of items in his possession also confirmed to be stolen, including guitars and jewellery.

Elrix is remanded in custody on 37 previous charges, and now faces new charges of theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property, breach of release order, and unlawfully in a dwelling house.

This prolific offender has a history of fleeing from police, says Street Crimes Unit Cpl. Trevor March. Street Crime Unit officers were able to identify Mr. Elrix and time the arrest to ensure he could not continue evading police, in addition to securing significant evidence to advance this investigation.

RCMP says Elrix’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 2.
