A popular Victoria pub will pour its last pint next month.

Canoe Brewpub, located inside the historic City Lights building along Victoria’s Inner Harbour, will close its doors on Oct. 18 after 19 years in operation, according to a company press release.

But the news isn’t all bad.

The pub will reopen as CRAFT Beer Market following major renovations to the building, which are expected to take four to six months — with planned re-opening in late winter 2021 or early spring of 2022.

“We are excited to reinvigorate the space to be a landmark destination within the community,” PJ L’Heureux, founder and president of CRAFT Beer Market, said in a press release, adding. “There is a lot of history in the building, and we’re thankful for the support that the community has given Canoe over the years.”

Canoe Brewpub became part of the CRAFT Beer Market company in March and according to the release, renovations include an open beer-hall style with the incorporation of a yard-games area, and a major expansion and upgrades to the harbourfront patio.

The new CRAFT Beer Market will have over 100 draft taps featuring local and international beers, ciders, and meads. The company says existing brewing facilities that exist within the historic Victoria building will remain intact and continue to produce local brews under the CRAFT Beer Market label.

“We have long been serving Victoria-born beers at many of our locations,” adds L’Heureux. “We are excited to be a part of the Victoria craft beer community as a producer.”

CRAFT Beer Market has multiple locations in Canada, including two in Vancouver and one in Kelowna. The Victoria location will be their first on Vancouver Island.
