Victoria Police are alerting Esquimalt parents and asking for help to identify the suspect in an unprovoked attack on a 12-year-old boy Wednesday.

Police say the incident happened between 8 and 8:30 a.m., as the child was riding his bike to school when he was grabbed and pulled from the bike by a man he did not know.

The attack took place in the area of Devonshire and Fairview roads in Esquimalt.

VicPD says the boy reported falling to the ground and shielding his face as the man who pulled him from his bike stood over him and grabbed at his backpack.

Police say the boy reported a second person, believed to be a male, pulled the suspect away and told the boy to get on his bike and leave.

The child rode his bike directly to school and police say he was not physically harmed.

The boy’s family notified police about the incident late Wednesday afternoon.

Esquimalt patrol officers are looking to speak with the second man who intervened in the incident.

Police are also ensuring parents in the area are aware.

A description of either man was not provided and officers are hoping to identify witnesses in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call Victoria Police at 250-995-7654, or Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
