Victoria police say they are investigating a structure fire that started on Empress Avenue Tuesday morning.

Police said officers responded to a report of a structure fire in the 1100-block of Empress Avenue just after 8:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, firefighters with the Victoria Fire Department were extinguishing the flames.

Victoria Fire Department Battalion Chief Gord Taylor said the fire was reported at 8:10 a.m. Firefighters found smoke in the basement suite upon arrival and gained access through the kitchen window on the ground floor.

“We found a vacuum cleaner on fire and we took that outside and extinguished it outside,” Taylor said, adding that the vacuum cleaner was in a mechanical room.

Taylor said there was minimal structural damage and the occupant was not in the residence at the time.

Police said there were no injuries in the fire.

Anyone with information about the fire who has not yet spoken to officers is asked to call the VicPD non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654 and select option 1 for the report desk.
