A popular live music venue in Victoria is closing for good.

Logan’s Public House on Cook Street announced on its website that it would be closing permanently due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The pub had been closed since March.

“When we closed the pub in March, we assumed it was a short intermission of service due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We abided by the closure regulations put in place by the government regarding live music venues,” the pub said in a statement on its website.

Located in Victoria’s Fernwood neighbourhood, Logan’s opened in 1997 and became a popular establishment, hosting live music, karaoke and drag nights as well as movie and game nights and other events.

“It is with huge regret and profound sadness we announce the permanent closing of Logan’s Pub,” reads the statement. “This is a hard letter to write as we know how much Logan’s Pub is loved by many people.”

Logan’s had considered reopening without live music but said there were too many forces against them that made it impossible.

“We have hung on unopened as long as we could, trying to cover our overheads in hopes this would all change,” the pub said. “With the costly overheads, costly COVID-19 regulation renovations, a closed kitchen, the fact we couldn’t have a streetside patio like many bars downtown, distancing and seating rules and last call at 10 p.m. it simply wasn’t going to work.”

With coronavirus cases surging in British Columbia, and potential new regulations on the horizon, Logan’s said the live music model wasn’t viable anymore.

“B.C. is in the second wave of the virus with no clear path forward without a vaccine. Add in the potential threat of more regulations/closures due to the rising cases and the live music venue model becomes no longer viable,” the popular establishment said.
