One woman has been sent to hospital, after accidentally starting a brush fire near Dallas Road Saturday.

Fire crews arrived just after 1 p.m. near Beacon Hill Park to the large blaze and were able to extinguish it quickly.

They say a woman was trying to start a fire down by the beach, and suffered minor burns on her head when she tried to put out after it got out of hand.

Officials say she not acting maliciously and was very remorseful.

“This is a good reminder that beach fire season and fire season is right around the corner, and people need to be diligent about smoking materials and fires,” said Victoria fire Battalion Chief Doug Carey.

“It doesn’t take much warm and dry weather to make the bank on Dallas Road vulnerable.”

Carey points to concerns from B.C. Hydro about drier than average conditions over the winter. 

Officials are also reminding the public that beach fires anywhere in the City of Victoria are prohibited.

“We are not sure if charges are being laid… our biggest concern is her well-being because she was slightly hurt,” said Carey.

He adds that during the incident there were 34 calls tying up 911 resources. Reports were still coming in as they were on the scene.

Carey said if someone sees an open fire on the beach that appears under control (for example, a bonfire being used for cooking that isn’t spreading), they can call the fire department’s non-emergency number.
