The City of Victoria is officially unveiling its latest expansion to the Banfield Park dock, located in the Gorge Waterway.

The expansion triples the size of the dock, which was last updated in 2022.

The additions include a new swim platform and several safety features, including “swim steps” to make it easier to enter and exit the water, a new children’s lifejacket loaner station, and anchored buoys that mark the boundary of the swimming area.

Meanwhile, the gangway connecting the dock to the shoreline has been replaced altogether.

“The dock at Banfield Park is one of the most popular spots in Victoria to swim and paddle year-round,” said Derrick Newman, acting director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities in a release Friday.

“The expanded dock increases access to the Gorge Waterway and will give people more room to stay active and safely enjoy this special part of Victoria’s waterfront,” he said.

The expansion was completed at a price tag of $300,000.

The city says the project is part of council’s plan to increase water access along the Gorge.
