A solid stretch of hot summer weather on Vancouver Island will persist through Monday before dropping nearly 10 degrees Tuesday as cooler air moves in, according to an updated special weather statement from Environment Canada.

The special weather statement is in effect for Greater Victoria, inland Vancouver Island and eastern Vancouver Island.

Daytime highs will approach 30 degrees for a third straight day in Greater Victoria, Nanaimo and Port Alberni as a strong ridge of high pressure remains over B.C.’s South Coast, Environment Canada says.

But that ridge will be replaced by an upper low-pressure system Tuesday, causing temperatures to drop by nearly 10 degrees, closer to seasonal averages.

Environment Canada predicts Greater Victoria will see highs of 20 degrees and 18 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, with a 60 and 70 per cent chance of showers each day.

Much of southern B.C. saw temperatures in the 30-degree range over the weekend, but nothing came close to toppling records set during last year’s deadly heat dome. Port Alberni, for instance, recorded a blazing hot 33 degrees Sunday — several below 2021’s record high of 38.7 for June 26.

The recent spell of hot weather after a cool and wet spring has BC Wildfire Service on alert, despite a lower-than-normal number of recorded wildfires — 171 — so far this season. Six of those have occurred in the Coastal Fire Centre region.

Environment Canada says that using sunscreen, wearing a hat and wearing UV-protective eyewear will help protect against heat-related illnesses.
