WATCH: Downtown Victoria is about to get another hotel and the owner will be the University of Victoria.

The University of Victoria will be the owner of Victoria’s first new purpose-built hotel in 15 years.

The development includes:

·         1306 Broad St., a one-storey commercial building

·         1312 Broad St., a parking lot

·         1314 Broad St., the three-storey Duck’s Building

·         1324 Broad St. and 615-625 Johnston Street, the Broad Building (Canada Hotel)

Fourteen commercial tenants and eight residential tenants will be affected.

The university says it will provide assistance that “meets or exceeds the City of Victoria’s Tenant Assistance Policy.”

A previous plan included rental housing for which students would be given priority, but the university decided to change it after the provincial government approved funding for more than 600 student housing spaces near campus.

“Frankly, this was a surprise because we weren’t consulted on this matter,” said Mehdi Hashemi, chair of the UVic Graduate Students’ Society. “And we believe that for this decision, the students should have been involved in the process of decision making.”

The redevelopment will be undertaken by Chard Development.
