The University of Victoria is investigating after a large gathering hosted during the COVID-19 pandemic was broken up by police Friday night.

Saanich police were called to the campus around 9:30 p.m. and video captured by The Martlet shows students being dispersed by officers.

A statement sent to CHEK News by the University of Victoria says “Disregarding UVic guidelines and policies is not acceptable, and we are investigating the events on campus and following up with those involved.”

It goes on to say “Our response will be consistent with university’s policies and reflect the serious nature of these actions in creating a risk to our community.”

Even after being pushed off-campus, the crowds still lingered around the area.

“It’s very discouraging to see this type of behaviour from this group, individuals that feel that their decisions to get together compromise the health and safety of everybody else trumps their intentions of getting together and gathering to have a party.,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades from Saanich Police.

One 18-year-old man was arrested for public intoxication. But police say they were unable to issue any fines under the provinces new penalties for hosting, attending or promoting gatherings.

“Tickets were not issued to any individual of the groups because of them dispersing so quickly, not giving officer much time,” said Anastasiades.

“There were only two officers on the scene. Certainly the behaviour of the gathering was disturbing, and we hope the behaviour is highlighted in the media to discourage further gatherings.”

There is concerns of the fallout from these large parties.

“As a student who takes in-person classes, we know the value of being in person. Not having that and possibly having that taken away would really suck,” said one student.

“I am frustrated because I think we are really lucky to have the little bits of kind of freedom, of going to some select few classes and to see a few friends here and there,” said another student to CHEK.

“When people gather it kind of undermines the whole effort.”

Saanich police say they will be stepping up enforcement in this area as concerns over a second wave continue to grow.
