The first of an estimated 100 refugees from Ukraine have arrived at their new home at a former resort in Sooke on southern Vancouver Island.

Owner Brian Holowaychuk says he hopes the property will help give them a sense of community, as many have had to leave loved ones behind.

He and other volunteers spent months preparing the former resort site for refugees by fixing up the buildings and collecting donations.

They are also clearing an area to accommodate trailers.
