The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a whale that was struck by a Washington State ferry.

Passengers aboard the ship reported seeing an injured whale bleeding.

The humpback whale breached about 1.5-metres in front of the ferry’s bow about three minutes after the ship left Seattle last night for the 8:15 p.m. sailing to Bainbridge Island.

Crew members did not see the whale coming and did not have time to manoeuvre away from it.
