Progress is being made in addressing the long-standing health care shortage issues in Port Hardy, with Island Health announcing two new doctors are accepting patients in the district.

Health care on the North Island has frequently drawn attention, as the emergency department has faced a number of closures and the number of doctors continued to dwindle.

Earlier this week, Island Health announced two new doctors were now working in Port Hardy. Both are accepting new patients and will also work in the emergency department.

Dr. Ramiz S. Alhadi and Dr. Hadi Awad Hmoud will both work at the Port Hardy Primary Care Centre.

Alhadi has been practicing medicine since 2017 after graduating from the University of Basrah College of Medicine in Iraq.

He says he takes a holistic perspective to patient care.

“My approach has always been comprehensive, focusing not only on the patient’s current complaint but also on understanding the whole picture,” Alhadi said in a news release. “You cannot treat the complaint without treating the cause, and to find the cause, you need to get the full picture.”

Hmoud has 30 years of experience, and is returning to the North Island after previously living in the region while his wife did her residency in Port Alice.

“Having spent time in Port Hardy before, I already had a sense of the community’s warmth and resilience,” Hmoud said in a news release. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve this community once again.”

This follows after another doctor, Dr. Sinan Alkhaleeli, came to the community in November.

Ian Wood, North Vancouver Island clinical services director, says this is the result of the work to improve health care in the area.

“The arrival of these two skilled physicians is a testament to our commitment to improving access to healthcare in the region,” Wood said in a news release. “We look forward to working alongside them to deliver exceptional care to our patients.”
