Thousands of residents continue to be without power after the latest B.C. storm hit Vancouver Island’s shores on Tuesday.

A large portion of Vancouver Island was hit with high winds and heavy rains, beginning Tuesday morning and lasting through into the evening.

According to BC Hydro, approximately 3,500 customers continue to experience power outages on Wednesday morning.

Crews have been working since yesterday in an effort to store power to a variety of areas and BC Hydro says that “steady progress” has been made so far.

The BC Hydro website suggests that there are a handful of outages in the Campbell River area that are affecting hundreds of people each. Specifically, trees are down across wires in the area of Heriot Bay Rd. and Gorge Harbour Rd. BC Hydro says crews should begin work on these two situations this morning.

Another major outage is impacting approximately 1,300 customers in Courtenay after a wire came down as a result of the wind.

In Ucluelet, approximately 250 customers are without power and a crew is currently on the way to fix the problem.

Due to ferry cancellations, customers on Quadra Island, Cortes Island, Hornby Island will be without power overnight. There will also be some customers out in Ahousat, Opitsaht & Port Hardy (Quatsino) areas where crews require boat access, daylight to continue repairs,” BC Hydro said in a tweet sent on Jan. 5.

Customers on Salt Spring and Galiano Island were without power overnight as well due to extensive damage from the storm, however, BC Hydro says crews are on their way to the southern Gulf Islands this morning as well.

Environment Canada has lifted the weather advisories on Wednesday as the frontal system has moved on.
