This Week in History: Collaborating for Conservation: a Royal BC Museum Pocket Gallery exhibit

The BC Parks License Plate program generates funds that support community engagement, Indigenous relations, and conservation. And right now, the Royal BC Museum has an exhibit detailing some of that important conservation work.

“There’s over one thousand protected areas in the BC Parks system” says Sharilynn Wardrop from BC Parks, “that cover over 14 million hectares, or over 14 per cent of the province. This exhibit is telling the story of a BC Parks inventory program.”

Parks have been established to allow all of us to enjoy outdoor recreation, and also, to allow us to be in nature. But, as Wardrop explains, there is another important reason.

“Another big reason is for conservation, because we need to know what Parks are protecting, so we can make good decisions about how to manage them, and so that we understand what role the park system is playing in conserving biodiversity across BC.”

The exhibit, Collaborating for Conservation, is located in the Museum’s pocket gallery, off the main lobby, and will be on display until August 11. Learn more about the exhibit in this week’s episode of This Week in History.

This Week in History is sponsored by the Royal BC Museum.
