COVID-19 has cancelled so many wonderful events this year, particularly those during the holidays.

But there the pandemic couldn’t stop the Greater Victoria Festival Society from moving ahead with an event that could support the local community.

In this edition of The New Normal, CHEK’s Stacy Ross talks to Kelly Kurta, executive director of the Greater Victoria Festival Society, about their Light up the City campaign. The five-week campaign kicked off on Nov. 28 and raises money for local food banks.

“The response we got to Light up the City was amazing,” she said. “People were happy.”

“It is really important . . . that bellies are full and kids have a toy under the Christmas tree this year. It’s not just about Christmas time, you know, it is important that we remember all throughout the year to give back, to give to our community,” she added.

Under the current provincial health order, food and toy bank drive-thrus are classified as events and therefore not allowed.

But Kurta said she believes those drive-thrus should be allowed and said she has written a letter to the provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, urging her to modify the existing order that currently classifies food and toy bank drive-thrus as events.
