Saanich Police have arrested an individual suspected of lighting a fire outside an apartment complex early on Sunday morning.

In a police report issued on Wednesday, it says patrol officers were called to a blaze just after midnight on Feb. 7.

The blaze had been spotted by a witness just outside a residential complex in the 3200-block of Eldon Place.

The fire, which was located at the front entranceway of the apartment complex building, was extinguished quickly after authorities had arrived on the scene.

Investigators reviewed the building’s video surveillance and were able to identify a possible suspect after a Saanich PD officer “immediately recognized” the individual.

Police were able to located and arrest the suspect only a few hours after the blaze had been extinguished.

“While the fire was not particularly large in nature and was contained to a plastic bucket, the fact that it was up against an outside wall of this large, 94-unit residential complex presented a very real and serious risk to personal injury,” noted Cst. Markus Anastasiades.

No one was injured as a result of the fire, according to police.
