Starlight Stadium to expand to 10,000 seats once BC Hydro pole is relocated

Starlight Stadium will hopefully add the 4,000 new seats late this year or early next year, says Langford's mayor.

It’s home to the newly-crowned Canadian Premier League champions and fresh off the Canadian women’s soccer team gold medal tour. Soon, Langford’s Starlight Stadium will be getting another boost — an expansion to 10,000 seats.

The plan to expand the stadium has been in the works for years, but Langford City Council has now signed an agreement with BC Hydro for the $8.5-million project that will see a power pole relocated, with additional seats being added in the stadium’s north end.

As per the city’s budget, $4.5 million will be spent on nearly doubling seating from 6,000 to 10,000, and roughly $4 million will be spent on the BC Hydro pole relocation.

Langford Mayor Stew Young said it’s the right time to expand, with the stadium getting a lot of high-profile attention after the gold-medal-winning Canadian women’s soccer team visit, Pacific FC winning the Canadian Premier League championship and the women’s World Rugby Sevens tournament returning later this month.

“There’s a lot of support in the community for it,” he said. “We could’ve sold out 10,000 tickets just on the women’s soccer game.”

Young says many national teams like Soccer Canada “love” the stadium, and once it expands it’ll also be in a place to book high-level entertainment acts.

“We’re going to bring in absolutely the best entertainment that you can get in Vancouver, you’re going to see in Langford now. That’ll stop everyone from heading over, paying for the ferry, doing the hotel room,” he said.

Young said he hopes that BC Hydro will be able to complete the power pole relocation by the end of the year, with additional stands being installed two to three months afterward.
