There is a new place to get bags of sand in Sooke.

The District of Sooke announced that its sandbag station has moved to a parking lot at Ed MacGregor Park, located on 6751 West Coast Rd.

The new station is self-serve and is open 24 hours a day — seven days a week — and residents are asked to bring their own shovels. Residents are also encouraged to take only enough to meet their needs so that supplies are available for others.

“Parks staff will monitor the inventory of sand and bags during routine inspections that occur each week. During weather events, additional supplies will be made available. Please take only enough to meet your needs so that supplies are available for others,” the District said in a statement on its website.

Previously, the sandbag station had been located at Parks Yard on Kaltasin Road and operated intermittently during weather events.

“This yard location limits access and requires additional staffing which increases the costs to operate the station,” the District said on its website.

Sooke Mayor Maja Tait said in a statement posted on the municipality’s website that the station’s new location will be more cost-efficient and beneficial to residents.

“With the changing climate and greater need for a sandbag station, combined with continually increasing cost pressures, the District is always looking at how to improve service without added expenses to our taxpayers,”
