Snow expected for parts of Vancouver Island, warning issued

Snow is on the way for Vancouver Island.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for eastern Vancouver Island, including Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo, and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay, as well as Malahat Highway, Goldstream to Mill Bay.

The weather agency says a cool airmass related to a low-pressure system will bring snow or rain starting this evening on Vancouver Island and lasting into Sunday afternoon.

Communities immediately near the water, including Comox, Parksville, and Nanaimo, are expected to see as much as 5 cm of snow while 10 cm of snow is expected at higher elevations such as the Malahat.

Environment Canada also says inland parts of eastern Vancouver Island, from Campbell River to Courtenay, could see as much as 15 cm.

“The complex terrain around the south coast will result in varied snowfall totals across the region,” the weather agency said in a statement posted on its website.

Special weather statements alerting to the possibility of snow have been issued for western, inland and northern Vancouver Island.

Environment Canada says the snow is expected to change to rain or become mixed with rain late Sunday afternoon.
