One elderly man has died, after a serious two-vehicle collision Sunday on Highway 19A between Courtenay and Campbell River.

The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. just north of Endall Road, investigators say the man might have attempted a U-turn when another vehicle hit his car.

The RCMP, B.C. Ambulance Service and fire crews are on the scene and have closed the highway from Hamm Road to Endall Road.

No details are being released about the condition of others involved in the accident.

B.C. Hydro crews were called in as one of the vehicles struck a hydro pole during the crash.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area. Those driving north from Courtenay should use Highway 19 if they plan to travel up-Island.

Drive B.C. says detours are in place, the road will open to single lane alternating traffic at 7:30 p.m.
