The province is providing nearly $45 million for seismic upgrades at Ucluelet elementary and secondary schools, and a partial replacement to the latter.
Ucluelet Secondary, which hosts students from Tofino and Ucluelet, will undergo a partial replacement including a new classroom block for 250 student spaces, and seismic upgrades to the rest of the school.
The upgrades are expected to be done by September 2021.
The project also includes a Neighbourhood Learning Centre for 25 child care spaces, a new music room, library and administration block.
The province says the elementary school, located on the same site, will have a complete seismic upgrade to be done by September 2022.
Elementary students will use available space at the secondary school during construction.
The nearest elementary school is 40 kilometres away, while the nearest secondary school is 100 km away in Port Alberni.
“The community has been waiting for years for seismically safer schools, and I’m excited to see it happen for students and families,” Mid Island-Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser said in a statement.
