UPDATE: Victoria’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre says two kayakers reported missing have been found and are safe.

The update came after 10 a.m. Tuesday, about 12 hours after the JRCC received a report the two people were missing near Lasqueti Island.

The JRCC says it was informed by crews from the Royal Canadian Air Force Cormorant helicopter and Canadian Coast Guard Cape Cockburn vessel the pair were found in Welcome Bay, near the Sunshine Coast.

They were located safe, but the JRCC would not say what condition the two individuals were in when they were found.

The search area covered 288-square kilometres and surrounded the Malaspina Strait and the Sabine Channel off Lasqueti and Texada Islands.

Multiple aircraft, provided by Canadian Forces Base Comox, and Canadian Coast Guard vessels and auxiliary boats participated in the search.
