It was a scary start to the day for Vancouver Island residents when a tsunami warning was issued for the west coast of B.C.
The warning came following a 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck 280 kilometres south-east of Kodiak, Alaska.
The warning was cancelled around 4:30 a.m., but not before many people got out of their homes for safety.

Victoria advised residents near water to move two blocks inland, to higher ground or to an upper floor of a multi-story building. The City of Victoria said they made a mistake by only sending text and email alerts to mobile phones, while voice calls went to landlines for this morning’s alert. The city says in the future, they will send out alerts via text, email and phone calls to all phones assuming it is warranted.
