A 33-year-old Victoria man was arrested Tuesday after a Saanich police officer noticed something suspicious about his rear licence plate.

A member of the Traffic Saftey Unit pulled over the man’s Audi A4 on the 3800-block of Quadra Street around 2 p.m. after finding it difficult to read the plate due to a thick plastic cover.

The officer discovered it was a laminated piece of paper and that the man was a prohibited driver.

He was arrested for violating the prohibition and altering a licence plate, and was issued a $707 violation ticket for the plate cover and for not having insurance.

“Although the results of this vehicle stop were surprising, this is a great example of the work our Traffic Safety Unit does on a daily basis to help keep our roads safe and to hold drivers accountable for their actions,” said Sgt. Julie Fast with the Saanich Police Department in a release.
