Road to Recovery: Woman who lost job because of COVID creates successful small business

As COVID-19 hit, thousands of British Columbians lost their jobs and most of them were women.

A new report released by RCB found that 10 times more woman lost their job than men during the pandemic.

Karmen McNamara, was one of those who lost her job amid the pandemic.

But instead of sitting around and doing nothing, she ended up using her CERB money to create The Kindness Factory, a successful business that sells high-quality masks and other products.

In this edition of Road to Recovery with Douglas Magazine, CHEK’s Kori Sidaway speaks to McNamara about how she bounced back from what she calls a “really dark” place to creating a successful business in a matter of months.

“It grew very very quickly,” McNamara said.

The Kindness Factory recently released reusable menstrual pads and had their two busiest weeks of mask sales on record.

McNamara said she’s hired more people to make masks and reusable pads in order to keep up with surging demand.

“We can’t make them fast enough,” she said.
