A 26-year-old man has been arrested and may face multiple charges, after allegedly defacing a roundabout in Langford.

West Shore RCMP says he had been observed spray painting the traffic circle at the Peatt Road and Brock Road intersection on Thursday evening.

Police arrived and located the man who they say was heavily intoxicated. After a search, they found spray cans and stolen items such as a wallet with a credit card and identification.

Officers also discovered the man was breaching the conditions of a previous release. They will be recommending charges for mischief Under $5,000 in relation to the graffiti, and stolen property for the wallet.

If the man used the credit card he may also face fraud charges.

“Graffiti has been proven to attract crime or the potential for there to be crime, our main goal is to keep our community safe, if we can keep them out that is what we are here for,” said Cst. Nancy Saggar, media relations officer for the West Shore RCMP.

“There is also a potential for restitution for cleanup, I know Langford in the past has pursued civil suits against those people found guilty of graffiti.”

The detachment has been busy with graffiti incidents recently. This month two cases have resulted in four women under the age of 18 and a man being arrested for the offence.

“These people are being held responsible… We are working with all our bylaw officer including the CRD with this. Wherever we see this activity we will be deploying our resources,” added Saggar.

The man will appear in court Friday afternoon.
