Police in Nanaimo say they are investigating after an unspecified threat was directed at a mall in the city’s north end.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, officers attended Woodgrove Centre at around 10:15 a.m. this morning after receiving reports about a threat made against the building, shortly before the mall was scheduled to open.

Numerous officers and a police dog searched the interior of the building but found nothing suspicious.

“While they were conducting their search, customers were not being allowed inside the mall. Staff were also directed to remain inside their respective businesses,” Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said in a press release.

The search was completed about an hour later and the mall was deemed safe for people to enter, however, O’Brien said officers will remain on the scene “search areas of the mall that the public did not have access to.”

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2021-2187.
